Final spot denied in last minute

Cambridge City 3

Wisbech Town 2

Two goals from Chris Bacon weren’t enough to overcome a strong Cambridge City side who got a last-gasp winner in the Ridgeons Cambs Invitation Cup at Milton Road last Tuesday.

City progress to the final to face holders Ely City.

Boss Steve Appleby, who began with three up front, said: “I tried a different system, something I’ve wanted to try for a while.

“We played a very strong side from a few levels higher and acquitted ourselves well. I’m proud of the lads.”

The first of Bacon’s goals was a 30-yard strike on 31 minutes after he robbed a defender, with the second on 76 minutes from a ball by Adam Millson who came on when Callum Reed suffered a calf injury on 11 minutes.

Craig Hammond scored twice for City, the second from the penalty spot, with the winner arriving in the 89th minute via sub Adam Marriott.

Wisbech: Roberts, Jon Fairweather, Johnson, Reeve, Cartwright, Reid, Reed, Jackson, Friend, Gale. Sub: Millson.
