Former Wisbech Town FC boss Steve Appleby has sensationally quit as joint-manager of Holbeach after just seven days.

Appleby, who was at the Fenmen helm for three and a half years before stepping down in September 2013, had last week agreed to join title-winning boss John Chand as joint manager following the resignation of Glen Maddison but he contacted our sister paper the Spalding Guardian to say he has changed his mind.

Appleby, who won the league cup with Wisbech, said: “I hold my hands up and admit it was a mistake.

“My decision has got nothing to do with John or Holbeach and they have understood and respected my decision. Any non-league manager will tell you it’s a thankless task.

“It consumes you 100 per cent and, rather than give it two or three months and then quit, I’d rather be honest and admit I shouldn’t have agreed to return to management.”

Appleby had been away from management for eight months since his exit from the Elgood’s Fenland Stadium.
