The Fenmen triumphed in the United Counties League Cup on Saturday thanks to three second half goals, which means they host Eynesbury Rovers in round one.

It was level at the break after Chenecks scored on 42 minutes but recent signing Gary Gibbs equalised a minute later to mark his first goal for the club.

Tom James (2) and Matt Lunn were on target to make the game safe at the Elgood’s Fenland Stadium.

Joint manager Paul Cousins said: “I was pleased with the second half.

“We were very poor in the first half - with everything, with the work-rate.

“We had a few words at half-time and they came out a different side in the second half.”

“We’ve strengthened the side and Kieran Doherty, who I have played with at Wisbech and at King’s Lynn, played very well.”

Former Norwich United, Lynn and more recently Spalding midfielder Doherty has rejoined Wisbech after a gap of four seasons and went straight into the squad for Saturday’s game.

Two key players are affected by ankle injuries. Cousins said of midfielder Adam Millson: “He has a ‘pot’ on his ankle and has ligament damage after having X-rays. He’ll be out for three to four weeks.”

Captain Jon Fairweather has a really bad sprain and much bruising. Cousins says the defender is “touch and go” for Saturday at Cogenhoe.
