The Hares, who were 2-0 up in the first half, almost battled to one of the shocks of the season against fourth-placed Halstead Town on Good Friday.

March went ahead on 34 seconds and 23 minutes, and the visitors netted on 35 and 60 minutes in Thurlow Nunn League Division One.

Jordan Goult headed home a corner from Ash Blanchflower, while the prolific Sean White lifted a fine free-kick over the wall and into the net.

Boss Paul Blanchflower said: “It could have been 3-1 up at half-time as Ash Brand just failed to lift the ball over the keeper.

“Sean White had a chance right at the end but he never got control of the ball on that pitch. Toby Ayres had an excellent full senior debut and David Jackson was solid at centre-half.”

Cornard won 2-1 at Downham Town on Good Friday to put the Hares bottom of the league. March were on 17 points, Cornard 18 and Downham 19, which made it all to play for at the basement with the Hares at Downham on Monday.

March: Barwick, Dunlop, Lorraine (Sean Saxby), Goult, Jackson, Pepper, A Blanchflower, Angus (L Welcher), Brand, Ayres, S White.
