Hares are in seventh heaven

Downham Town 0, March Town 7

THE Hares ran riot in this local Ridgeons Division One derby game on Easter Monday and need just two more points to confirm a top four finish to the season.

Brett Whaley was worried before the game with a depleted side but his team produced one of the best displays in recent weeks for their biggest win of the season.

Stu Anderson led the way with a hat-trick but Kyle Nolan also had a very good day with his first goal of the season and three assists.

Anderson opened the scoring after just 25 minutes when he headed home a James McDonogh free kick.

Nolan made it 2-0 five minutes later when beating two men before shooting home from 25 yards. Anderson then hit his second and Adam Rothery saw his shot cannon off both posts before entering the net for 4-0.

The young home side had no answer for the March onslaught and there was no let up after the break when Ash Brand scored from a Nolan pass and the same player set up Anderson for his hat-trick. Substitute Alex Burton completed the rout with March’s seventh goal.

Whaley said: “To hit seven goals in any game is good but with such a depleted squad this was special. We played some really good football and we were clinical in front of goal which we have not been lately.

“We need just two points to make sure of fourth place and it would be nice to do it on Saturday at champions Thetford who we have beaten twice this season and they have not scored a goal against us.”

Luke Pepper and Marc Welcher will both be back for Saturday’s game.

March: Aaron Butcher, Jon Shippey, Dan Jenkins, Gav Cooke, Adam Sutton, Chris Lenton, Adam Rothery, Kyle Nolan, Stu Anderson, Ash Brand, James McDonogh. Subs used: Alex Burton, Josh Westley.
