Hares fail to build on win

March Town 1, Long Melford 2

This was a disappointing performance from the Hares at the GER on Saturday after their win against Ridgeons Division One high-flyers Whitton a week earlier.

Not for the first time this season Jamie Weston’s side have followed a win against a top side with a lacklustre show in the very next game.

Long Melford were perhaps just the better side in an uneventful first half with goalscoring chances at a premium.

But some poor defending after the break allowed the visitors to take a 2-0 lead as they continued to look the better side.

The first goal came on the hour when central defenders Lee Day and Kyle Plumb got in each other’s way allowing a Long Melford striker to prod the ball home from close range.

Just 10 minutes later a Long Melford player broke on the left and was allowed to break into the six-yard box and his mishit shot sent Lee Brooks the wrong way as the ball rolled into the net.

With just nine minutes left Adam Cornell gave March some hope when he prodded the ball home for six yards out after a corner. Then in the final minute Day had a good chance for an equaliser but the ball bobbled as he shot and his effort went over the bar from eight yards out.

Weston commented: “We did not get a good start as we did at Whitton and we were just not up for it this week and really that has been the story of this season.

“We have had good wins against the top sides but lost out to teams we should be beating. We really gifted them their two goals and if Lee Day had scored in the last minute it would have been more than we deserved.”

March: Lee Brooks, Jordan Goult, Ben Lemmon, Lee Day, Kyle Plumb, Dan Sterna, Adam Sutton, Simon Bates, Danny Rasberry, Stu Anderson, Ash Brand. Subs used: Adam Cornell, Andy Bryan, Lloyd Johnson.

Weston is hoping to have forward Juliano de Menezes back for the Easter games against Stowmarket on Saturday and Downham on Monday.

He missed the Long Melford game after a cycling accident left him bruised and missing his two front teeth.

Weston added: “We have to beat Stowmarket if we are to finish in seventh place otherwise the best we can hope for is eighth place. They are both games we can win but it seems we need to start well to gain the confidence as we did at Whitton.”
