March Town 4, Cornard United 0

It was only three goals in the last 10 minutes that produced the scoreline of a comfortable win at the GER on Saturday against Ridgeons Division One strugglers Cornard.

But truth is that March made hard work of a victory which should have been sewn up well before the 80th minute. On the bright side the three points took them into fourth place in the table.

March started the game well enough and Ash Brand was soon proving a handful for the visiting defence but saw a well-struck shot well saved.

The home side eventually took the lead after 26 minutes with Gav Cooke launching a long ball through to Stu Anderson to find the net.

But for the next 50 minutes of the game manager Brett Whaley was left pulling his hair out as March wasted chance after chance to secure the important goal.

Anderson was left with a good opening but headed against the bar and then Chris Lenton followed suit from another Cooke cross.

After the break March continued to dominate but Anderson twice missed good opportunities and the danger was that Cornard would catch the home side on the break. But fortunately the March defence stood firm with goalkeeper Lewis Moat coping with anything that slipped through.

Finally the all important second goal, arrived on 80 minutes when Anderson turned provider for Brand to chip the ball over the keeper into the net.

Brand quickly made it 3-0 from a Dan Jenkins pass and then Lewis Cook’s cross was headed home by the six foot six inch sub Alex Burton, a former Soham Town player, for the fourth goal.

Luke Pepper played the last 30 minutes after illness.

Whaley said: “We missed so many chances that we made it hard work. But it says something when you win 4-0 and feel disappointed.

“We hit the bar twice and wasted four one on ones and you worry that they will break away and score before you can get that second goal. It has happened to us before this season.

“But it was good to bounce back with a win, but disappointing now that we do not have a game next Saturday.”
