Hares net first win of season

March Town 2, Cornard 1

THE Hares recorded their first win of the season at the GER on Saturday but manager Paul Crosbie described the performance as the “worst of the season”.

The victory against bottom of the table Cornard lifted Hares into seventh place and Crosbie said: “We have taken the lead and then given away a sloppy goal again for them to equalise.

“We did manage to get in front again on the stroke of half-time but I was still not a happy man in the interval and stripped the paint off the walls.

“The effort and work rate was good again as it has been in every game but we just didn’t play as well as we can in the first half.

“It was better in the second half and though we were never in trouble we had a few close shaves. I am delighted to have taken the three points and get the monkey off our backs and hopefully we can now move forward.”

Robbie Masters gave March the lead after 20 minutes shooting into the bottom corner of the net from 15 yards out as the game was played in pouring rain.

But Cornard, who had not threatened up to that point, were back on terms after 36 minutes when some poor defending let them in.

After 44 minutes March opened up the Cornard defence, but looked to have overplayed things until the ball was laid back to Guiliano Staffieri to fire a low shot into the bottom corner from 20 yards out.

March did produce some better football after the break with Aidan Hollis outstanding in the middle of midfield, but at times let themselves down with one too many passes around the penalty area.

Crosbie made a triple substitution to try for a third goal with new signing Jack Saunders, Olly Cooper-Clark and Joe Barnes coming on.

Cornard did put some pressure on towards the end for an equaliser but the March back four stood firm.

Not a pretty win but at least March are now off and running for the season.
