Hares unlucky to lose

March Town 0, Newmarket 1

MARCH Town were unfortunate to lose their first home Thurlow Nunn Division One game of the season at the GER on Tuesday night.

The Jockeys certainly had the whip hand in the first half and took the lead after 30 minutes when Stephen Bugg scored with a far post header from a corner.

Just before that goal March’s best chance came when Robbie Masters headed over the bar from in front of goal from a Shaun White corner.

March struggled to retain the ball in the first 45 minutes but were a much better side after the break. After just five minutes Stu Anderson set up Guiliano Staffieri, but the midfielder’s shot from 12 yards was wide of the target.

March also had further chances at corners but Josh Westley headed wide and then Masters saw his effort saved by the keeper on the line at the second attempt. They also should have had a penalty when Matthew Bonner handled in the area.

Manager Paul Crosbie said: “We changed things around at the break and we were much better in the second half and kept the ball better. The real disappointment was that we did not test their goalkeeper more, but we are going in the right direction and although we have just one point from our first two games it could so easily have been four.”

Goalkeeper Ben Collett completed his signing for before the game and became the fifth Chatteris player to join the Hares this summer and will be in the squad for Saturday’s FA Cup game at Wellingborough.
