Gorleston 2, Wisbech Town 2
Paul Jones scored an equaliser four minutes from time to help the Fenmen snatch a point on the coast in this Ridgeons Premier Division encounter on Saturday.
Manager Steve Appleby felt it was a fair result and commented: “They have some good players and look a side who could go on a good run and so time might show that this was a good point to pick up.
“We might have been a bit fortunate with the equaliser that went straight into the net from Paul Jones’ corner but even then we had chances to win the game. But to be honest it was a fair result.
“We started the game well for the first 20-25 minutes and led but then we seemed to go into a shell and allowed them to take control and conceded a sloppy goal for their equaliser.
“We are still not quite right and there is work to do but that is three games unbeaten since the Mildenhall defeat and we have to keep the run going.”
Chris Bacon gave Wisbech the lead after 10 minutes when Stacy Cartwright whipped in a cross from the left and Bacon got ahead of the defender to turn the ball into the net.
But 15 minutes later the home side were level when Christy Finch turned well to beat two defenders and shot into the net.
Jon Fairweather had a long range effort tipped over the bar before Gorleston went close to taking the lead with the woodwork saving Wisbech and then had a confident appeal for handball in the box turned down.
Just before the break they had the ball in the net only for a linesman’s flag for offside to save Wisbech.
Six minutes into the break Gorleston took the lead after a Wisbech effort was headed off the line. A cross for the far post was not defended well enough and Liam Harvey-Cooper headed home.
With just four minutes left Wisbech grabbed an equaliser when Jones’ corner from the left evaded everyone and sailed straight into the net.
Wisbech keep racking up the bookings, with Spafford, Thomp-son, Reeve and Bacon’s names going into the referee’s book.
