Lack-lustre Fenmen fail to take advantage

Wisbech Town 0, Woodbridge 0

STEVE Appleby described this as a real lethargic performance from his side on a day they lacked the spark to open up a Woodbridge defence at the Fenland Stadium.

The Fenmen’s plight was also not helped when they had defender Stacy Cartwright sent off after 60 minutes for a second yellow card although it was after this that the 10 men produced their best spell of the game.

There is little doubt that Wisbech missed the wide play of the absent Callum Reed and Matt Lunn who may have had more joy to get round the back of a stubborn defence.

In the end there were precious few chances at either end when a hard pitch seemed to hinder the Wisbech passing game with their 5-3-2 formation, with Darren Jimson just behind the front two of Chris Bacon and Nick Davey.

Appleby said: “It was a very tight game. They played with just one up top and it was very frustrating. But we did not play well and at times were very lethargic and did not move the ball quickly enough to break them down.

“We seemed to up our game when Stacy was sent off, but still could not get that vital goal. I have no complaints about the sending off. Once you’re booked you cannot afford to go diving in for the ball.

“It was bad enough that we drew but it was like a double whammy to hear that Wroxham and Brantham had both lost and we really had not taken advantage.”
