Wisbech Town FC have just learned of the death of former player John Downie, aged 87.
Signed in September 1957, Downie was described as the final “jigsaw part” of Oscar Hold’s marvellous team of 1957/58 - and many an elderly fan who can remember those days will say that he was the finest football player to don the Wisbech shirt.
Born in Lanark, Scotland in 1925, he began his Football League career with Bradford Park Avenue, and also featured for Manchester Utd, Luton Town, Hull City and King’s Lynn before joining the Fenmen.
Downie scored 42 goals in 68 games for Wisbech, including four strikes in the last-ever Christmas Day match at Fenland Park during a 7-0 demolition of Grantham.
Downie then moved to Mansfield Town for a £1,000 fee in late September 1958.
