Wisbech Town 0, Leiston 1

The Fenmen failed to complete the double over the Ridgeons League champions but manager Steve Appleby is hoping his players learned a valuable lesson.

Leiston suffered their only league defeat of the season on the opening day of the campaign against Wisbech and they were quite happy to grind out a result on this occasion.

The defeat ended a run of seven unbeaten games for the Fenmen but they can really have few complaints about the result.

The winning goal came after 37 minutes with a great finish and was one of the only two chances the champions created in the first 45 minutes.

After the break Wisbech did better and had three chances to have brought the scores level but manager Steve Appleby said: “Leiston are a benchmark for us next season. They showed us how to grind out a result and we have drawn too many games this season when perhaps if we had shown the same mentality we could have won some of those games.

“They scored from one of two chances in the first half whereas we missed our opportunities after the break. And that is what wins you games.”
