Wivenhoe Town 0,
Wisbech Town 1
Fenmen manager Steve Appleby revealed he was going to replace match-winner Matt Lunn, who scored deep into stoppage time on Saturday in the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division.
Relegation threatened Wivenhoe held out until Lunn shrugged off the attentions of two defenders down the middle to score in the sixth minute of injury time.
Appleby said: “Matt has had two of the poorest games he has had for us. I had his number on the board with ten minutes to go but I just had a change of heart.
“I thought he was one player who might make something happen. I took young Joe Jackson off instead – obviously the gods were looking after me.
“We had put Paul Cousins up front and had to go for it, deciding to be braver. With Callum Reed coming on out wide I left Matt on and because of that everything paid off.”
The Fenmen earned their second league win and second clean sheet in a row. It keeps them at sixth in the table with 49 points from 24 games but closes the gap on fifth place Gorleston to one point and Wisbech have games in hand on all the top five. New leaders Dereham Town have 57 points from 26.
They also had two strong penalty shouts turned down, and Appleby added: “We bossed the game and had 80 per cent of the play. We just couldn’t score.
“They defended for their lives, we had balls cleared off the line and we got our just desserts. We’re happy with that and getting wins.
“We have had to be clinical at both ends and that includes defending well.
“Their defender handled the ball on the line; and then Jon Fairweather managed to get to the ball in front of the defender and he blatantly got kicked.”
