Thetford Town 3, March Town 1
THE Hares failed to make it three wins in a season against the Ridgeons Division One champions whose more clinical finishing won them the three points on Saturday.
The lack of a natural goalscorer has been manager Brett Whaley’s concern all season and among the top six clubs only Brightlingsea have scored less goals than March.
Whaley said: “I thought we competed well and there was little between the two sides. They were just more clinical when their chances came along. I am not saying we deserved to win but I felt we deserved something.
“We have normally defended well this season but when you are not scoring goals then the pressure comes on the defence and we could have done better. Before their third goal we had good chances to have got level again but did not take them and then they hit a third goal.”
Thetford took the lead following a corner and a very good volley after 20 minutes.
For the next 20 minutes March upped their game and were rewarded five minutes before the break when Ash Brand was brought down and Luke Pepper scored from the penalty spot.
Unfortunately March could not hold until the break and in the 44th minute Thetford regained the lead from a quickly taken free kick which was a poor one to concede.
After the break March had opportunities to get back on level terms but Brand, Pepper and Stu Anderson failed to take them and Thetford came up with a third goal from a 25-yard strike.
March: Aaron Butcher, Jon Shippey, James McDonough, Gavin Cooke, Adam Sutton, Chris Lenton, Adam Rothery, Kyle Nolan, Stu Anderson, Luke Pepper, Ash Brand. Subs used: Casey Logan, Ben Hepworth, Alex Burton.
