DIVISION ONE KO CUP
Wivenhoe Town 0 March Town 0 (4-5 on pens)
Keeper David Beeny was the hero as the Hares knocked out the Thurlow Nunn League First Division leaders after emerging triumphant from the Dragons’ den.
They put in an incredible league cup quarter-final performance on Saturday to win 5-4 on penalties at Wivenhoe, who had not lost at home and having lost to them twice in the league.
The hosts had won 17 and drawn once out of 18 league games so far.
Wivenhoe are a physical and direct side, but March outmuscled them, limited their opportunities and dominated for long periods.
Kieran Evans, on for the injured midfielder Matt Cox, saw his shot just clear the bar.
Beeny kept the home side at bay late on, and the tie went to penalties. The Hares were first and conversions from Liam Merryweather, Josh Jackman, David Jackson and Evans were equalled by the hosts to make it 4-4.
Beeny picked the ball from the net and placed it on the spot before rolling it home after sending their keeper the wrong way.
He then walked back to the goal before making a superb diving save off the last spot-kick to send the Hares into the semi-finals.
March: D Beeny, Jackman, Hearn, Merryweather, Jackson, Mattless, McManus, Cox (Evans), Cooke (S Beeny), Odain, Barber.
Next Saturday March Town FC do not have a fixture but host Dereham Town Reserves in the league on February 6.
