Peacocks’ proud run

This is Gornal Athletic’s best ever FA Vase performance.

The previous best run of manager Ian Rowe’s Dudley-based team was reaching the third round in 2010–11.

The Peacocks are fourth in the Baker Joiner Midland Alliance Football League. Last Saturday they beat visiting Rocester 3-2.

Gornal are no mugs at home, unbeaten in the league with four won and four drawn at the Garden Walk Stadium. Top scorer is Marvin Nisbett, who can play wide or down the middle, with 17 goals in all competitions.

In this Vase campaign they have beaten Atherstone Town (5-2 away), Nuneaton Griffin (2-0 away), Lye Town (3-1 away), Coventry Sphinx (8-1 away) and Boston Town (1-0 home).

Through his Boston contacts Wisbech manager Steve Appleby gave his verdict on the opposition: “They’re quite strong, quite physical at the back. I’ll adhere to a system while making sure we’ll play our own game.”
