CALLUM Reed’s second half goal rescued three points for the Fenmen against the struggling Bloaters on Saturday.

On paper this should have been a comfortable win for Wisbech, but in the end they really had to dig out a victory with a performance that was well short of their best.

There is little doubt that the players’ inactivity over the last three weeks showed and they came up against a young side well organised by manager Mike Derbyshire and desperate not to give their visitors an easy ride.

Conditions in the first half made it difficult for both teams and perhaps the best piece of football came in the first 20 seconds from the kick off.

Wisbech put together a string of five passes as they opened up the home defence and Nick Davey’s shot forced a very good save.

Davey also hit the post in the first half, while the home side did force a good save from Ryan Rayner.

After the break the Fenmen mounted strong pressure on the home goal. Davey’s turn and shot forced a low save from Cudden, and then he forced the rebound over the bar.

Matt Lunn then had a shot turned away by the home keeper and Davey hit the woodwork from the resulting corner.

The goal finally came after 65 minutes when Lunn, after good work on the left, hit a low cross for Reed to finish with a simple tap-in at the far post. Then Paul Cousins, making his first appearance since his move from Wroxham, hit the crossbar and Reed hit the post.

Yarmouth did have a couple of half chances near the end, but Wisbech always looked in control.

Manager Steve Appleby said: “We looked like a team who had not played for three weeks. We were passing when we should have been shooting and shooting when we should have been passing.

“But we went there for the three points and that is what we came away with. It was not a pretty win but sometimes you just have to win ugly and we did that.”

Wisbech: Ryan Rayner, Neal Spafford, Scott Johnson, Paul Cousins, Jon Fairweather, Callum Reed, Adam Millson, Steve Reid, Chris Bacon, Nick Davey, Matt Lunn. Subs used: Ollie Gale, Lewis Thompson, Sam Murphy.
