Wisbech Town manager Steve Appleby was delighted Steven Reid became his fifth new signing for the club on Monday.

The Chatteris Town midfielder has been training at the Elgood’s Fenland Stadium and featured in the first friendly of the season at home to Soham Town on Saturday.

Appleby commented: “I am well happy he has decided to join us. I had good reports about him and he looked decent in training, too. Then on Saturday he just got better and better as the game went on.

“I have been looking for more presence in the centre of midfield and I am sure he will give us that. He is a strong tackler and can play good football as well. He is another young player and has got a hunger for the game just like the other four signings we have made and I am sure he is is going to be a big part of the team.

“I asked him to sign after the game and he wanted to think about leaving Chatteris and making the move up. I respected his decision and was delighted when he let me know on Monday he was joining. I think we are just about there with the squad, but you are never going to let a quality player go if one became available. We will just have to see how things go in the next couple of weeks.”

It was a big decision for Reid as his former Chatteris manager Jimmy Unwin commented: “Steven is a quality player and is quite capable of stepping up two levels to play at Wisbech.

“But at the same time he will be huge loss to Chatteris on and off the pitch as he is also on their committee.”

Reid did play one game for Ely City at the start of last season but was none too impressed with their style of football and stayed at Chatteris.

Wisbech Town and March Town United have home fixtures on the opening day of the season in the Ridgeons League on Saturday, August 13. In the Premier Division Wisbech entertain Wivenhoe Town, while Whitton are the visitors to March in Division One.

On Tuesday, August 16, Mildenhall Town come to the Elgood’s Fenland Stadium and on the Wednesday the Hares travel to Godmanchester.

It is FA Cup time on August 20 with Wisbech at home to Halstead Town in the Extra Preliminary Round, while March Town face Kirkley & Pakefield at the GER. If both teams win they will meet in the next round.
