March Town United FC held a surprise 70th birthday presentation to former captain Melvyn Sims, who had not been back at the club for around 30 years.
His grandsons Sami and Regan were mascots at the match, which the family sponsored, at home to Haverhill Borough on Saturday at the GER ground.
Melvyn’s son Martyn explained: “We moved down south in the mid-1980s with my dad’s job with Barclays Bank. My son is football-mad and when we moved house we found hundreds of trophies and programmes.
“We contacted the club and the chairman came back to me straight away and invited us as a guest, which was fantastic.”
During Mr Sims’ spell as a player during the late 1970s and early 1980s the Hares also reached the first round of the FA Cup in 1978–79, but lost 2–0 at Swindon Town.
After Saturday’s game the club held a party for Mr Sims at the town’s Cock Inn.
