Second league defeat for Fenmen

Wisbech Town 1, Haverhill Rovers 2

THE Fenmen went down to their second home league defeat in two games at the Elgood’s Fenland Stadium last Tuesday night in the Ridgeons League Premier.

In six minutes Wisbech went 1-0 down, and just before half-time the hosts replied through Paul Jones following a free kick.

However, Haverhill grabbed the winner early in the second half.

Wisbech boss Steve Appleby said: “We were all over them later on and we just couldn’t get an equaliser.

“I felt the lads worked really hard and were unlucky not to have been two or three up before they scored.

“With a little more luck we could have been ahead in the first half, and in the second half we had a couple of penalty shouts and three or four more chances.

“It was one of those days, and with a little bit more quality we’d have got something.

“I can’t fault the lads’ effort, they gave it their all.”

Defender Stacy Cartwright went off injured after half-an-hour with knee and ankle problems, and manager Appleby added: “He went in for a challenge and hurt his knee, and I’m hoping it’s just bruising rather than a long-term injury.”
