Stanway 0, Wisbech Town 0
A dress rehearsal for May’s league cup final ended in stalemate on Saturday in the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division.
Very few chances were created overall. It leaves the Fenmen seven points adrift of leaders Dereham, with Wisbech boss Steve Appleby saying: “Now it’s down to Dereham to slip up.
“In the last three games they have picked nine points and we have picked up four.
“A draw is normally a good result at a place like Stanway but it feels like a loss at the minute with the situation we are in.
“Stanway are a side I rate as they make it awkward for you. The pitch was rock-hard and I could see it was one of those games that was 0-0 or it needed something special or a mistake to get a goal.
“Defensively we were very solid and it seemed a bit flat. They had one shot and we had five or six outside the box and a few scrambles.”
The best Wisbech chance fell to Matt Lunn in the second half when the home goalkeeper dropped the ball, but it got stuck under the winger/forward’s feet and his effort was blocked.
“I said to the lads I wouldn’t fancy Dereham to win at home to Ely and away to Walsham. But if Dereham win those games then they will deserve to win the title.
“I said we have got to stay in control of our own destiny and win all our games. We have got to pick ourselves up.”
He said of his skipper, who has recovered from his illness: “Paul Cousins is better. I put him on the bench on Saturday and he will feature over the next couple of games.”
