Sutton rue cup misses

Peterborough League team Long Sutton rued wasting their first half chances in the Spalding Inter Services Cup final against Holbeach Reserves at Carters Park before losing 4-0.

Long Sutton manager Vinnie Mackay said: “We totally dominated the first half and had three or four really good chances. They took their one chance and we were one down at half-time when we should have been two or three goals up.

“They dominated the second half and scored three goals from set pieces. We just could not defend set pieces.

“That’s the fourth time we have got to a cup final in five years. We had a lot of young players out there playing against grown men, and I told them over the next few years they will be playing in more finals.

“We played well but in the end Holbeach were a bit too good and they took their chances.”

Two late goals conceded cost Leverington a point at Eye in the Premier Division.

Nathan Watson gave the visitors the lead on five minutes but Eye scored on the hour, on 82 minutes and in injury time.

Leverington boss Stuart Webb said: “There are lessons to be learned from it for the young lads. We have got to learn how to finish off games.

“We could have been two or three up at half-time, but we did not deserve to win it.

“They put us under a lot of pressure and the pitch was awful with no grass on it, but there are no excuses and give them credit.”

Relegation-threatened Parson Drove lost 2-0 at home to Pinchbeck United.

Division Two Guyhirn had a scoreless draw with Castor, while Sutton Bridge won 3-0 at Oakham United Reserves thanks to a Lee Still brace and a Liam Burton strike.

Division Three side Leverington Reserves continue to be on a roll, and their latest triumph was 3-1 at Whittlesey Res. Leverington scorers were Adam Bunton, Mariusz Kudyba and Tancsel Ibranim.

Long Sutton Res had a blank stalemate with Deeping A.

Craig Bradshaw was on target as Leverington A were defeated 2-1 at home to Oakham A in Division Five, and Sutton Bridge Res lost 5-1 to visitors Parkway Eagles, Bradley Fox netting.
