A five-star first half display handed the Fenmen victory in this BKD Cup game, which was both sides’ final pre-season friendly.

In-form Tom James struck a first half hat-trick, and in between the second and third strikes of his treble were efforts by Callum Reed and Jack Friend as Wisbech ended the first period 5-0 up.

Early in the second half Adam Millson added a penalty. Former Fenmen Max Mattless (who is also joint Wisbech U18 manager) and Lewis Thompson scored the March goals, watched at the GER Sports Ground by a crowd of 185.

Wisbech boss Steve Appleby said: “There were some fantastic goals. Tom James had a spectacular one from 25 yards, Callum Reed the same as he bent one into the top corner and Jack Friend scored from 25 yards.

“Tom has got obvious talent. He can play at a higher level, he just needs to apply himself. We play attractive football, and he is fast, direct and very skilful.”

Appleby gave youngsters a chance again and was impressed with right-back Oscar Kaye.

Appleby added: “We let Steve Harley go. It was one of those things, they just weren’t working out, but young Jack Friend has done well.

“Lea Jordan has left. I told him Tom Roberts will be the number one keeper this year. He wanted and deserved it. I was speaking to Lea and we parted ways. If Tom gets injured (and I hope he doesn’t) then I’ll look for someone on loan.

“I’d like to add one more forward, although we’ve got Matt Lunn until September. Apart from that I’m happy with the squad.”

Chris Bacon is seeking to progress with Cambridge City.

Appleby said: “I’ve got to plan without him as he still intends to go to New Zealand, and Cambridge will offer him 90 minutes. Good luck to him, he’s been fantastic for us.”

Wisbech: Roberts, Fairweather, Johnson, Cousins, Cartwright, Gale, Reed, Millson, White, James, Friend. Subs used: Lunn, Henson, Kaye, Clayton.
