Wisbech Town FC 5,

Long Buckby 1

The Fenmen went ton-up and notched their tenth victory in a row at home to UCL basement side Long Buckby on Saturday.

Wisbech’s fifth goal was their 100th scored in all competitions this season.

Goals from Neal Spafford (two minutes) and Danny Beaumont (8) had put the hosts in the driving seat in the ChromaSport & Trophies United Counties League Premier Division.

Buckby replied after the break but second half goals from Matt Lunn (66), Billy Smith (70) and Beaumont (86) kept the Fenmen in second spot.

Wisbech Town manager Dick Creasey said: “We never looked like we were in trouble but we never looked like we could push on.

“Two-nil at half-time is a dangerous scoreline.

“If the opposition get the first goal, they’re right back in it.

“Their goal was a wonder strike and that made us think we better go and score at the other end, and we did.”

Last night (Tuesday) Wisbech Town travelled to near-neighbours Yaxley for a ChromaSport & Trophies United Counties League Premier Division top-three clash.

Next Saturday Wisbech entertain 13th-place Newport Pagnell Town.

Wisbech: Jordan, Johnson, Spafford, Wilson, Horne, Smith, Bishop, Millson, Lunn, Treacher, Beaumont. Subs: Fairweather, Reid, Cobb, Ford, Cousins. Attendance: 155.

Scott Johnson (31 minutes) and Josh Ford (43) scored in the first half to take the Fenmen’s winning run to nine games last Tuesday.

Left-back Johnson picked his spot from the left of the box to rifle home, while Ford smashed into the far corner of the net from wide on the right when Deeping lost possession.

Home keeper Daniel Bircham denied Adam Millson, who also hit the woodwork. The second half saw Deeping up their game and Leigh Jordan made some excellent saves.

Deeping clawed one back in time added on.

Creasey said: “It was a hard-fought win. We did well first half but in the second half we dropped off after they went to a 4-3-3 formation.”
