Wisbech Town manager Brett Whaley has admitted the club are suffering from a crisis of confidence.
Despite emerging unscathed 3-2 from their tricky League Cup trip to Northampton ON Chenecks at the weekend, the Fenmen have suffered a sticky start to this season.
The lowest point came at home to Huntingdon last Tuesday when Whaley’s side suffered a shock 1-0 defeat against a team who hadn’t picked up a league point going into the game.
Whaley said: “It’s clearly a confidence thing with the players at the minute. We’ve been on a bad run and a few of them are very low.
“I’ve learned more as a manager in the last two months than I have in the last five years, but it will make me a better one.
“There are suggestions that the players are unhappy, but I hope they are feeling that way because results and performances are not good enough at the minute.
“The only way they can turn things around is by getting a couple of positive results. Once we do that I’m sure we will be fine.
“If we win and draw one of our next two games then suddenly we’ve only lost one game in seven and it gives us something to build on.”
Matt Sparrow (59 minutes), Jon Fairweather (49) and Robert Hughes with a 40th-minute free kick were all on target in the 3-2 win at ON Chenecks on Saturday and Whaley said: “For the first hour we were brilliant.
“We were using the ball well, but as soon as they nicked a goal we started to panic and try to rush things.
“It was the same against Huntingdon last Tuesday. As soon as they scored everything changed and we tried to rush things.
“The players were expending energy in areas which they didn’t need to be.”
The Fenmen’s problems have mainly come at the Elgood’s Stadium this season and Whaley said: “I’ve come to a much bigger club where the expectations are much higher than anywhere else I’ve been at before.
“I knew it wasn’t going to be easy but I didn’t expect it to be this difficult.
“It’s not easy at times, especially at home where we’ve not really performed and we are trying too hard.
“Away from home there hasn’t been quite the same problem.
“We need to get that sorted as quickly as possible. We need to pick up some results to take the pressure away.”
The tenth-placed Fenmen, who were due to host Sleaford last night, travel to Newport Pagnell on Saturday in the Chromasport UCL Premier Division.
