Wisbech Town finally triumph over Haverhill

Haverhill 0, Wisbech Town 5

STEVE Appleby finally got the monkey off his back as he tasted victory as manager for the first time in two years against Haverhill last Tuesday night.

That spell had produced three wins and a draw for Haverhill, but the Fenmen put matters right for their boss in some style to take third spot in the Ridgeons Premier Division with an eighth successive win.

Appleby had goalkeeper Ryan Rayner to thank early on as the home side pressured for an early goal and he pulled off a fine point blank save.

But after 20 minutes Wisbech swept into the lead with top scorer Chris Bacon firing a free kick into the top corner of the net from just outside the penalty area.

A Haverhill defender then deflected a Callum Reed corner into the net at the near post for 2-0 and then Bacon headed home a Liam Nimmo cross for 3-0 at the break.

Haverhill again put the pressure on Wisbech at the start of the second half, but Appleby’s men remained resolute and Bacon was in the action again when his free kick struck the woodwork and Lewis Thompson followed up to score the fourth goal from five yards.

The fifth came nine minutes from the end when Nimmo tapped in after a rebound fell into his path to round off a very good night for the Fenmen.

Appleby said: “It was a resounding performance and we were very clinical when going forward. We had a lot to thank Ryan Rayner for early on but then we clicked into action.

“It had looked a difficult game, but we went about the task very well and worked extremely hard to get the result.”

Stacy Cartwright came off after only 10 minutes when he turned his ankle, but Appleby is hopeful he will be fit for Saturday’s FA Vase game at Racing Club Warwick.
