Wisbech Town’s unbeaten run comes to an end

Norwich United 1, Wisbech Town 0

THE Fenmen’s unbeaten run of 12 games finally came to an end as the holders lost out to a controversial penalty in the Ridgeons League Cup on Tuesday night.

And just to rub salt in the wound Wisbech also had striker Liam Nimmo sent off for two yellow cards in the final minute and he is likely to miss the Boxing Day game at Ely.

Norwich started the game the better and had one shot cleared off the line before being awarded a soft penalty after just 14 minutes when Stacy Cartwright was adjudged to have clipped the legs of a home forward. Andy Key made no mistake from the penalty spot to put the home side in front.

It was a poor game as a spectacle with few chances at either end with Wisbech never able to produce their best football and lacking that cutting edge.

Manager Steve Appleby obviously not happy with the penalty and other things on the night said: “I only want to say I am incensed with some of the antics and performances on the night.

“We are carrying a few knocks and it showed as we looked a tired side. I suppose if we were going to lose a game this is better than Saturday or in the Vase the following week.”
