Norwich United 0

THE Fenmen consolidated their position in the Ridgeons Premier Division top six with a good display of football to beat seventh paced Norwich at the Tom Woods Beers Fenland Stadium last Tuesday night.

The two sides had drawn 0-0 seven days earlier and another dour struggle looked on the cards in a very even first half until the Fenmen took the lead five minutes before the break.

Scott Johnson played the ball down the left flank and Ash Stevens chased it down in the box and squared for the incoming Callum Reed to add the finishing touch with a shot into the corner.

Seven minutes into the second half Wisbech increased their lead with all three players involved again. Reed played a corner back into the path of Johnson and his ball in the near post was met by Stevens to snap up a poacher’s goal.

Wisbech played some good football all night and Stevens hit the post from just inside the area and Reed also went close.

The win was no more than Wisbech deserved.

Manager Steve Appleby commented: “We played some good stuff and worked hard. It just showed what we are capable of producing and it was a good result bearing in mind who we were playing and their position in the table.”

Youngster Olly Gale came on for the last 10 minutes and Appleby added: “He did all that was asked of him in that short period and I will certainly be giving him a start before the season is out. He deserves it.

“Sam Murphy has also done well when he has been with us and I have great hopes for both of them.

“We will see how they progress in the pre-season.”

Wisbech: Lea Jordan, Jon Fairweather, Stacy Cartwright, Paul Cousins, Scott Johnson, Callum Reed, Paul Johnson, Lewis Thompson, Darren Jimson, Ash Stevens, Matt Lunn. Subs used: Andy Furnell, Anthony Reeve, Olly Gale.
