Wisbech Town CC lost by one wicket in a Tucker League Division One thriller at Sawston whose last pair got the 14 runs need for victory on Saturday.

Wisbech posted 164-8 off 48 overs at Spicers Sports Field, with Kiwi Andy Lane scoring 21, Gary Freear 41, Josh Bowers 34 and tailender Sam Rippington a handy 17 not out.

Sawston reached 165-9 in 42.1 overs. Simon Freear starred with the ball in a superb analysis of 11-2-28-5, James Williams 2-50 and Brad Apted 1-21.

Captain Alan Burton said: “We were pretty average and it’s a good kick up the backside.

“The game was swinging either way and anything could have happened.

“If we’d have won, it would’ve been pulled out of the bag. I don’t think we should have won the game the way we played.

“There’s potential for a few changes next weekend but we’ll have to look at it.”

Chatteris beat newly relegated Hardwick by 56 runs at home on Saturday. Chatteris posted a solid score of 188 all out, with the ever-youthful Pete Munns making a nice 50.

Hardwick could only muster 132-9, Munns taking 5-17.

The second team were thrashed away at Abbots Ripton by 9 wickets, Chatteris being bowled out for just 36.

Leverington opened their Cambs League Junior 3 campaign against Bluntisham 2nds, winning with three wickets and 16 balls to spare.

Leverington contained the visitors to 43-2 off 16 overs, eventually reaching 183-4 in 40 overs.

Pick of the bowlers were Ian Cooper 10-4-19-0, Josh Beakhouse 8-0-32-2 and Luke Wilson 1-21. A third-wicket stand of 80 between Simon Gilbert (38) and Will Rhodes (51 on debut) put Leverington in the driving seat, Jordan Wilson (13), John Gill (17no) and Cooper (25no).
