Wisbech Isle Campus student Aaron ‘Azzy’ Charles (pictured) from Parson Drove had a glorious winning comeback to his Rotax kart racing career at the weekend at the Rye House Kart Raceway in Hoddesdon, Herts.
It welcomed his return to the Rotax 125cc Senior Max Class from the previous TKM class he had been running in, which did not seem to suite the talented 17-year-old driver.
After being one of the quickest at practice on Saturday, Aaron was looking forward to the Sunday race and was confident of a good result in the 17 strong grid. The cold and slippery conditions played into his and the kart’s favour.
The three heats saw Azzy at his best making decisive and confident moves bringing him home 1st, 7th and 2nd from his 1st, 14th and 8th place starts.
In the final he was outside on the slippery line, but he came out of the first corner in fourth place and was up to second by the third corner. He gradually pulled the leader in and led by lap 4. Charles drove seven more faultless laps to take the chequered flag.
He said afterwards: “I was confident I could come back here and do well after not being in the Rotax for nine months but am over the moon with the result.
“Nick Jest of Octane has improved the kart and his engines so much in the short time I was out of Rotax and they are really top class.”
Mic, Azzy’s dad and mechanic added: “I would just like to thank all the people who supported and made it possible for Azzy to get back into the Rotax Class.”
