MARCH Marlins took 12 swimmers to the Cambridgeshire County Championships over the last two weekends.
For many it was their first time competing at this level, and all did very well with the team winning four medals and setting 17 new personal bests (PB).
Adam Lifshack won four medals in breaststroke and achieved his first regional time for 50m breaststroke. He won gold in his age group for 50m breast with a new PB. In the finals for 13/14 years in 50m breaststroke he won silver. He won gold in 100m breaststroke and bronze in 200m breaststroke, setting new PBs. A new PB came in 100m Individual Medley.
Emily Morris achieved four PBs in 50m butterfly, 50m breaststroke, 100m Backstroke and 100m Freestyle. Jacob Halls set a new PB in 50 Breaststroke, and Luke Cable and Graham Shaw also competed.
Kahra Cottam set PBs in 50 Backstroke and 50m freestyle. Gemma McGowen, Chloe Richardson, Katie McGowen, Jessica Cable and Lucy Halls all set new PBs in 50m freestyle in their first county A’s.
Richard Shaw swam for Marlins on the first weekend, setting a PB in 50m freestyle, but after an unfortunate event during the week he passed away and he will be greatly missed by all Marlin swimmers. The club’s thoughts are with his family at this sad time.
l TWELVE Chatteris Kingfishers were in action again for the second weekend of the County A championships, in Peterborough. Fewer swims, but still 15 PB times, two swimmers in the finals and 12 top six places.
The two youngest swimmers, Daniel Riches (10) and Mollie Allen (12) got themselves in the finals again, with Daniel winning gold in the 50m butterfly (p.b.) and Mollie getting bronze in her age group and 4th place in the final for the 50m front crawl (p.b. twice). Mollie also swam to 5th in the 100m front crawl (p.b.). Mark Thompson (21) swam to silver in the 400m front crawl (p.b.) and bronze in the 100m butterfly (p.b.), with 8th in the 50m butterfly. Luke Oliver (15) also achieved a bronze, in the 50m butterfly (p.b.).
l ON the last day of the Cambs County Championships on Saturday, 22 Wisbech swimmers won two gold, two silver and two bronze medals; plus 16 PB times.
Ben Marsters produced three outstanding swims, finishing 1st in the 17+yrs 100m Breaststroke and 200m Breaststroke and made it to the 50m 15+yrs Butterfly Final.
He also qualified for the 50m Butterfly in the East Region Championships to be held in May.
Matthew Jakeman won the award for Top Boy in the 17+yrs age group, gaining 6th, 4th and 10th spots. Over the two weeks 32 swimmers had competed in 128 races producing 62 PB times and gaining five regional qualification times.
They won three gold, nine silver and eight bronze medals and competed in eight finals.
