March Bears 21, Sawston 12

March fielded 11 1st XV players, eight ‘Legends’ and two on debut in a pre-season friendly on Saturday.

In the first two of four 20 minute sessions Sawston dominated the scrum with a heavier pack. One try in each of the first two sessions saw the visiting team go in at half-time 12-0 up.

With a lack of front row for March, the second half was played with uncontested scrums.

With the wind behind them now, Stacey Mould scored, taking the opposition by surprise with a quickly taken penalty. Sean Saxby converted. Later in the third quarter Simon Althoff finished off a well worked interchange with Glen Rainer and Kris Feaviour to score. Saxby added the extras.

In the fourth quarter March quickly scored under the posts through Feaviour, Saxby converting his perfect kicking day. Impressive tackling from Glen Rainer, Matty Day, John Aspinwall and Jamie Kerse.

A positive start for March, in readiness for the 1st XV’s first league match away to Bury Wolves on Saturday and the Legends entertaining Ely 3rds.

Training on Thursday will be key to a good performance for both teams and starts at 6.45pm.

The club wishes Jason Ramsey a speedy recovery after cruelly damaging knee ligaments on his debut. Ben Saxby left with a suspected broken big toe.

President Barry Feetham said: “It is important that we have a positive start to the season in the top tier of the Greene King merit tables.”
