Former Wisbech Swimming Club member Gareth Bennett competed in the World Aquathlon Championships in Hyde Park, London, on the 2012 Olympic triathlon course on Wednesday.

These were the first races for the championship week which finalised in the men’s and women’s elite triathlons at the weekend.

Bennett (pictured) was a WSC swimmer from the age of 6 to 18 when he went away to university in Hull where he continued his swimming and competed at triathlons.

This year he has concentrated on the swimming and running of Aquathlon in the 40-44 age group. He now lives and trains in Hessle, North Yorkshire.

Having to qualify in the top seven in one of three UK races, Bennett achieve fourth on May 25 near Sunderland to qualify as one of 25 Great Britain athletes in the World Championships.

Supported by all his family, Bennett completed the 1k open water swim in the Serpentine and 5k run course in 36.38 minutes to finish 43 out of 72 world athletes and 16 out of 25 GB athletes.

Throughout the day athletes competed in para-triathlon, age groups between 16-79, plus elite, U23 and junior athletes.
