Blunt’s late drag flick denies league leaders while Sutton turn on the style

Wisbech drew against the league leaders to keep their promotion push alive.

The home side scored fortuitously moments before the break when a shot from a short corner went in off Ben Allsop’s arm. Sam Blunt equalised and at half time Wisbech were 2-1 down.

A penalty corner routine resulted in the ball striking a defender’s foot on the line and a flick being awarded. Joe Melton despatched the flick high into the net. Blunt’s drag flick got a draw.

The spirits were high after a well fought draw in East London the day before.

Missing Ed Batt again through injury, the deputising Gavin Johnstone had one of his best games of the season. Goals from Sam Blunt, Joe Melton, Gary Freear before half-time, plus Johnstone.

The second team avoided a potential banana skin with hard a fought win thanks to two goals in each half from Jason Esser, Lee Peck two and leading scorer Hugo Atkins.

Next Saturday: away to Cambridge City 4 at 2.30pm.

Wisbech Ladies 1st 5, Cambs Nomads 0

Wisbech were determined to put right the defeat at the hands of Cambs Nomads earlier in the season and netted five second half goals.

PoM Hannah Strickle, Katie Rodger, Lisa Williamson, Jane Peggs and Georgie Dunn were on target. The team are away to Lowestoft next Saturday.

Wisbech moved back to the top of the Cambs Premier League, coming back twice from being a goal down after a much improved second half.

Emily Brown was PoM. Two goals each for Emma Baker and Laura Overland. Wisbech are at home next weekend, 1pm, Cambs South.

Long Sutton 6, Havering 3

Sutton showed why they shouldn’t be fighting relegation.

From a penalty corner, Fyson fired in his first of the game. Sutton were 5-1 up at half time via Hales two, Sisson and Fyson’s second. The on-fire Fyson hit the post before he completed his hat-trick.

Horncastle 2, LSHC Mens’ 2nds 11

Sutton 2nd XI produced their best display of the season.

Sutton went into half-time 4-1 up via Dan Batten and following three short corners, two put away by Ben Shore and one by Jeremy Watt.

Second half goals: Ben Shore 3, MoM Andy Shore 2 and Nick Bailey 2.

Horncastle 2nds 3, LSHC Mens’ Fourth 2

Sutton goals came from MoM Ed White and a reverse stick shot from Jack Smith.

Long Sutton put in a strong performance but came away empty handed as Lowestoft took their chances.
