CADETS of the 1220 (March) ATC have been showing their prowess at darts and table tennis.
Each year the cadets compete for the Squadron trophies, being entered into the knock out competition and playing the other members of their flight until a representative of each flight plays in the final.
The darts competition produced some close fought games, and interesting displays of technique which eventually saw the final contested between Sgt Alex Ogden and Sgt Luke Goodall.
It was a close contest with Sgt Goodall winning by just one throw of a dart – and by winning the darts Sgt Goodall managed to keep the trophy in the Goodall household as the defending champion was his younger brother Scott.
The table tennis competition was closely watched this year as Sgt Daniel Woods sought to make it four years in a row. It was fairly close during most of the early stage matches with Sgt Simon Foster reaching the final alongside the defending champion. Sgt Woods had won each of his matches convincingly and managed to do the same in the final retaining the trophy.
For several years Wing Commander Paul Bower (Officer Commanding Beds & Cambs Wing and former Squadron Commander of 1220 Sqn) had promised to take on the winner of the Squadron table tennis competition as during his youth he used to play fairly regularly. In fact it is the reason 1220 ATC has a table tennis table as it was acquired during Paul’s time at the unit.
During the last parade night of the year the cadets attended in ‘mufty’ (non-uniform) and had a games night where they brought along electronic games to play, others got out the table tennis table and dart board and played a few games.
Wg Cdr Bower paid a visit to the squadron during the evening and it was a good opportunity for him to finally keep his promise. Sgt Woods took up the challenge and they played best of three games.
Daniel won the first, and then Wg Cdr Bower levelled the score. With it all to play for in the final game the eventual winner with a score 21-19 was Wg Cdr Bower!
Before the match Bower commented that “the last time I played was probably a couple of years before I got married” which makes it close to 30 years since he’s picked up a table tennis bat
