WISBECH Tennis Club has been presented with the prestigious Tennis Club Mark.
The national accreditation is recognition of the hard work that goes into running the club. The Wisbech club is also the only one in the Eastern region to receive the award despite only meeting for half of the year.
Neil Twitchett, development officer for the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) in the Eastern region, presented the club with the Tennis Club Mark on Sunday. The presentation was also attended by the Wisbech Mayor and Mayoress Jonathan and Susanah Farmer.
Sue Pitcher, from the club, said they were praised for the high standard of activities and the varied programme they offer players, particularly young people. The club is also well-run and organised, with a good committee and a clear plan of action for the future growth of the club.
She added: “The LTA are thrilled to bits with us. We’ve worked really hard to get this.”
The presentation followed a good day of tennis in bright but very windy conditions. They played the men’s and ladies singles finals, with Gary Fitzjohn and Margaret Pendall emerging the winners.
The players then enjoyed an American Tournament in the afternoon, with players old and young competing for the top spot. Gary Fitzjohn was crowned the men’s champion and Sue Pitcher was the ladies winner.
