The County A championships swimming took place in Peterborough and Cambridge this past month and nine individual swimmers, after qualifying for this level of competition, and the 11/U boys and Open boys relay teams of the Chatteris Kingfishers took part.
Gary Smith (Open) and Rachel Minett (Open) managed to get into some finals, a great achievement against the might of Peterborough and Cambridge swimmers.
Tyler Thomas swam in the 11/12 age group, having just turned 11, but showed great promise by finishing 5th in the 200 I.M. (p.b.), 11th in 50m butterfly and 13th in 50m backstroke (5th and 7th in 11 years) and 15th in 100m backstroke, all in personal best times. Finley Harper (11) was 14th in the same category in the 50m breaststroke (7th in 11 years) and 27th in 50m frontcrawl (PB).
Liam Oliver (15) and Matthijs Nooteboom (16) encountered the same problem at times, as they swam in the 15/over category, but both did well and also swam in the Open relay team bagging 5th place (front crawl) and 7th (medley) with Smith and Mark Thompson.
Liam swam PBs in all four races: 5th in 100m I.M., 9th in 200m front crawl, 17th in 50m front crawl (3rd in 15 years age group) and 29th in 100m front crawl (9th in 15 years). Matthijs got PBs in 200m front crawl (4th), 50m backstroke (18th overall, 6th in 16 years), 100m backstroke (21st overall, 11th in 16 years) and 50m butterfly (19th overall, 9th in 16 years), also competing in 100m front crawl, 50m front crawl and 100m I.M. (5th).
Smith (Master) was most successful, getting into the final of the 50m front crawl (5th), 50m backstroke (5th in final) and 50m breaststroke (3rd in final, 1st in Open age group). He also competed in 100m backstroke (10th overall, 5th in Open).
Minett got the final of 50m breaststroke (5th overall, 2nd in Open age) and also competed in the 100m (PB, 18th overall, 9th in Open age) and 50m front crawl (27th overall, 12th in Open age). Kirsty Slyfield (Open) swam in 50m butterfly (p.b., 16th overall, 6th in Open), 100m I.M. (10th) and 50m backstroke (18th overall, 6th in Open). Catherine Lee (15) in her last ever competition was 4th in 100m breaststroke and 8th overall, 3rd in 15 years 50m breaststroke.
