A powerful display of running rugby put Wisbech Grammar School’s 1st VII in second place in a tough group at Reed’s Sevens in Surrey on Sunday.

Competing against Pangbourne College, St John’s School, Leatherhead and the Royal Grammar School, Guildford, the Wisbech boys scored eight tries, with Matthew Retchless on four, Joshua Widdowson on three and Patrick Webb with one.

The Grammar School team, which was one of four sides that qualified to go into the cup, then played Hurstpierpoint College, winners of the prestigious Shiplake Sevens the week before, in the semi-final and lost by just a single score. Tries from Oliver Timms and Matthew Retchless kept the Grammar School side in contention throughout.

Master in charge of rugby Mr Alex Laybourne said: “Last year we only scored one try and did not win a single game in this tournament. This year the boys came back with a vengeance, battling throughout and shocking and surprising everyone.

“For their first competition this year the boys performed very well, improving in each game and competing against some of the big schools on the London circuit.

“This is the start of what we hope will be a successful sevens season.”
