Young rugby players at Wisbech Grammar School and Magdalene House have ended their season on a high with a top-scoring performance against Beeston Hall preparatory school.
In a series of six matches members of the under 13, under 12, under 11 and under 9 sides won five out of six games, amassing a total of 237 points and conceding only 47. Three of the matches, involving the under 12 and the under 11 A and B sides, all ended in 52-0 victories.
The under 9 A side, which won 35-10, remained unbeaten all season after securing wins against Copthill (10-5), St Hugh’s (25-5), Witham Hall (40-10) and Gresham’s (30-10).
Head of boys’ sport Phillip Webb said: “This has been an excellent season for the pupils and a reward for all the hard work put in by the pupils and the staff.
“The under 9 A side has played some excellent rugby, working effectively as a team and performing well individually.”
The school’s hockey teams were unbeaten in four matches in a mini-tour against Warwick School netting a total of 26 goals and conceding only eight, winning three matches and drawing one.
All the matches were played indoors, because the Astroturf was frozen, and the biggest win came from the under 13 side, who ran out 9-1 winners after an excellent performance.
The under 14 side secured a 7-1 victory and James Thompson played well in goal, making good saves.
In the last game of the day the under 15 A side worked well as a team to secure a 7-3 win.
In the only draw the under 15 B team worked hard against the opposition and fought well in defence to keep the opposition at bay with the final score 3-3.
