Gill defies pain barrier

Jordan Gill defied injury to win his sixth pro fight at Peterborough on Saturday against last-minute opponent Kristian Laight, who Gill beat in his very first outing as a professional.

The Chatteris prospect, who will turn 19 next week, had injured himself while sparring. He nevertheless won all four rounds 40-36 to pass the pain barrier.

He said: “I couldn’t perform my power shots. I had an injured hip and didn’t perform well.

“I had to grit my teeth and he was 8lbs heavier than me. I will now have a week or two out with the physio and have a title fight in September.”

Eli Frankham, the Wisbech heavyweight, made it two pro wins out of two by beating Simeon Cover from Worksop on points.
