March Olympic athlete Louise Hazel has revealed she is to quit the heptathlon, less than 12 months before the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Hazel was due to go to the Games as defending champion in the women’s multi-event discipline having struck gold in Delhi three years ago.

But the 27-year-old athlete has now opted to step away from the sport, for now.

“I’m retiring from the heptathlon but I’m not ruling out other sports, I just feel I can’t carry on in that discipline,” the now London-based athlete told Metro.

Hazel has been working on her Podium Effect, devising a programme that will get people into fitness, and accepted a role as a running ambassador for the British Heart Foundation.

Hazel finished 27th in the London 2012 Olympics.
