Eastrea Triathlete Andrew Jakeman finished in second place at this year’s Age Group Sprint Triathlon European Championships.
Following a two-year break from the sport, Jakeman qualified for the the European Championships last year, as the fastest qualifier at Rother Valley Triathlon.
The Championships were held in Alanya, Turkey, where temperatures soared to over 30 degrees. With a 750m swim that was strong enough to bring him out of the Mediterranean Sea swim with the front group, Jakeman fought on the 20km bike course, his weakest discipline, to keep himself in contention for a podium finish.
Coming off the bike in sixth and 2.47seconds behind first place, Jakeman had to work hard in his strongest discipline where he managed the fastest run 5km split (16.26), overtaking four competitors to finish as runner-up with a time of 58.22
With the podium position, the Chatteris Kingfishers Swimming Club head coach has gained automatic qualification for next year’s Europeans qualification.
He is looking for sponsorship to support him with a goal of progressing to further international podium finishes and elite racing.
