March Boxing Club junior Charlie Stevens became Great Britain champion at his 60 kilo weight after two international fights in Wales.
On Friday he took part at the semi-final stage. Stevens (representing England) took on James Leary (Wales) and made it hard work in this awkward bout, but won by ten points to four.
Then on Saturday in the final against Scotland, Stevens beat William Mowat.
“We thought this would be hard,” said March ABC coach Bernie Wing. “They put up a terrific round. Charlie’s had ten bouts this year and has won all ten – magic.”
In the first round Stevens took a bit of time to sort out his opponent’s southpaw style and was two points down. The second round was different as Stevens got his back hand going and came back at the end of the round two points up.
In round three Stevens was holding his own as the bout ebbed and flowed in an exciting and worrying round. Stevens prevailed, winning by 16 points to 11.
