Kingfishers finish in second spot

THE Chatteris Kingfishers team finished in second place just behind Boston A at Bedford in the second round of the Anglian League, hosted by St. Neots.

Other teams were Boston A, Chatteris, West Norfolk Swimming Club and St. Neots. Due to a clerical error the final points still need to be confirmed. The swimmers got 16 personal best times, 12 first places, 8 second places and 4 third places.

Catherine Lee got the first first place by beating the cut-off time in the 13/U 100m front crawl (p.b.) and she came first in the 15/u 100m breaststroke as well. Mollie Allen also swam in the 13/U age group and came first in the 200m I.M. (p.b.), also beating the cut-off time, the 100m butterfly (p.b.) and the 100m breaststroke (p.b.).

In the Open age group girls Kirsty Slyfield finished first in the 50m backstroke (p.b.) and 50m butterfly, whilst Kathleen Loveridge won the 50m front crawl and the 50m breaststroke and came second in the 100m I.M. Charlotte Riches swam in the 15/u age group and finished second in the 100m front crawl (p.b.), third in 200 I.M. and fourth, with a p.b., in the 100m butterfly.

Rebecca Clay (11) swam a p.b. in the 13/U backstroke, but got disqualified. David Loveridge (11) swam 100m backstroke and 100m front crawl for the first time ever (in 13/U), whilst Liam Oliver (12) finished second in the 13/U 100m breaststroke (p.b.) and 100m butterfly (p.b.).

Twins Ivo and Matthijs Nooteboom (14) did the honours in the 15/U, with Matthijs finishing 1st in the 200m I.M. (p.b.) and second in the 100m butterfly (p.b.) and 100m backstroke and Ivo arriving first in the 100m front crawl (p.b.) and second in the 100m breaststroke (p.b.). Luke Oliver (15) won the Open 50m butterfly (p.b, through cut-off), whilst Ashley Starreveld (15) finished third in both the Open 50m front crawl and 50m breaststroke and master swimmer Andrew Fresher finished third in the 50m backstroke. The relay team (6x50m) finished in second place behind Boston A.

On the same night Daniel Riches (10) and Lydia Gray (9) competed in the fourth and final round of the Peterborough mini-meet, competing against young swimmers from as far apart as Milton Keynes and Grantham over four rounds.

After the third round Daniel was in fourth place and he swam so well that he finished in second overall. Lydia was in sixth place after the third round and her final placing is still to be confirmed.

l Wisbech SC hosted the second round of the Anglian League with Boston B and St Ives visiting.

Matthew Jakeman, Tom Kelly and Oliver Newton had double wins and overall the team had 13 wins, 15 second place finishes and five swimmers broke the cut-off times. With Wisbech and St Ives joint top it meant the lead throughout the night changed in a keen contest. At the penultimate event both teams were tied, and St Ives snatched victory in the final race.

Annual Spring Gala

Wisbech SC held this on Thursday as 48 swimmers from the Development and County Squads took part. The close competition, with 97 personal best times set, provided a great atmosphere. At the end Greg’s Gremlins won with 120 points.
