Wisbech swimmer Liam Knight has been accepted onto the England elite training programme focusing on the Rio 2016 Olympics.

British Swimming has a “World Class Swimming Programme” that sits on top of the ASA English Talent Programme.

The premier level is World Class Podium. Knight has now been identified on the second level, the World Class Podium Potential “Road to Rio”.

A selection of athletes are hand-picked with the potential to gain a final and medal place at Rio. Athletes get a small amount of funding, camps and access to support services should they require it.

Places on the Podium potential level are reviewed every year and the Wisbech teenager will have to show development to maintain his place at this level.

There are only 70 spaces for two programmes at world class in the whole of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Knight swims for City of Peterborough (COPS).
