Ladies wilt under pressure

Wisbech Ladies 1,

Holcombe Ladies 4

Wisbech started their first hockey game of the season in the East Premier League brightly, determined to hold their own.

The first half went well with both teams having evenly matched chances. However Holcombe continued to pressurise and took a one goal lead before half time.

Wisbech started the second half knowing that the next goal would determine the match and were confident due to their first half performance that they would be the ones to grab the opportunity. Despite working hard as a team and keeper Becs Howitt superbly saving a penalty stroke, Holcombe put three more goals past Wisbech in the second half.

The home team continued to push for a goal and a precise pass from midfield found Jane Peggs, who effortlessly slotted the ball past the keeper in a one on one situation.

Player of the match was awarded to the whole team for tireless hard work and team play. Next weekend Wisbech travel away to Ipswich.

Wisbech Ladies 2nds 1, Spalding Ladies 1sts 3

The 2nds were unable to add to last week’s win in their first home game of the season.

Spalding started the stronger and were 2-0 up at half time.

The home side made some changes to their formation for the second half and started to gel. Player of the match, Laura Overland, was the focal point of much of Wisbech’s best hockey and she scored a fantastic solo goal after dribbling past numerous Spalding players.

Wisbech had some short corner opportunities to try and equalise, as well as various chances from open play but Spalding found the net towards the end. A special mention to defenders Kat Doyle and Katie Dunn.

Next: away at Cambs South (3.30 match time).
