Basildon 17pts, Wisbech 10pts
WISBECH put in a determined and courageous performance and were a little unlucky not to have got something more out of the game than the one bonus point.
Their pressure continually forced the home side into errors and they were fortunate not to capitalise more on them
The first half was error strewn and with a tricky crosswind both sides struggled to get any continuity in their play. Basildon spent the last 10 minutes camped in the Wisbech 22 but came away with nothing to show for their dominance and the score was 0-0 at half time.
Basildon started the second half better and eventually went into a 17-0 lead, but the dogged Wisbech side, battling for survival in this division, never gave up. Mark Laws kicked a penalty and late in the game James Napier went over for a try which Laws converted with the last kick of the game to earn the bonus point.
Stand-in skipper Will Pettit led by example and Phil Martell and Rob Wollard also had very good games too.
Skipper Tom Long is expected to return on the bench after a long absence for Saturday’s home league game against Wanstead (2.30)
Wisbech seconds pulled off a very good 12-10 win against Holt with an excellent performance.
Josh Anderson went over for two tries and Jake Reid converted one of them.
Matt Mitchell had an excellent game and was the man of the match.
