Norwich Medics 0pts,
Wisbech 2nd 41pts
WISBECH 2nds rounded off a successful league season with this emphatic win, scoring six tries in the process.
Wisbech had never beaten the Medics before – and they were sitting second in the league – but starting brightly the 2nds showed their intention to play running rugby with number 8 Simon Clarke ploughing through the opposition fullback to cross the line. Sam Anderson kept the pressure up by kicking a penalty.
The front row of Ali Combden, George Gordon and Kerrie McMullen dominated and turned over nearly every scrum but handling errors prevented Wisbech from taking advantage.
Strong direct running by Ryan Tate kept the scoreboard ticking over with the first of his two tries. When the Medics attacked the Wisbech back-row were able to soak the pressure and turn the ball over and Olle Lake demonstrated his strength with some solid tackling. Nick Thompsett rounded off the scoring in the first half with a mazy run to make it 22-0.
Norwich Medics showed at the start of the second half they were not to be underestimated and with captain Oliver Mackett in the sinbin, the defence of Wisbech had to repel a strong Medics attack on their try line before Jack Malkin ripped the ball from a Medics player and scampered under the posts.
In the second half Wisbech had three tries disallowed and kept sustained pressure on the Medics. Ryan Tate scored another try displaying his usual power by bursting through tackles, while vice-captain Josh Anderson showed quick thinking to take a tap penalty and barrel over to round off a successful day at the office for the 2nds.
Wisbech will be looking to finish the season with silverware and are taking on the Cambridge Exiles on Saturday in the semi-final of the county cup.
