The captain of Wisbech Grammar School’s 1st XV rugby team helped the independent schools national side build a winning lead in an encounter with the Irish Exiles at Maidenhead Rugby Football Club on Sunday.

Matthew Retchless (18), who plays at number eight, scored the sixth try of the match in a 52-15 win.

The Newton student had won his place in the national squad following his performance for the northern side of the Independent Schools RFC Lambs against the southern team.

Bedford Blues scrum-half Alistair Price, who played for the 1st XV at Wisbech Grammar, is training with the Scottish under 20 squad in the run-up to this season’s U20 Six Nations tournament. The 19-year-old hopes to make his international bow.
